Did you ever get to meet and talk with Cheerful Gardner? When did he get the "Cheerful" nickname? Did he ever really smile? Did he have any children to carry on the elephant training tradition like your Dad did with you.

I met him twice, once when he delivered the 3 small elephants to Hugo, OK the winter of 1949-50 and again the day this picure was taken.I was working on concessions and my dad sent someone out front to fetch me. I was only 16 and didn't fully appreciate the moment.
He never had any children and you are right, he didn't smile much.
