This 1944 poster with its attached date tag for Hartford recalls a fateful day in circus history.

Thank you, DICK, for verifying this one is from '44. My late friend, Ernestine Clarke, was a superb amateur photographer. She was on the show that year, in fact on the program cover with Lou Jacobs, and I have the photos she took of the fire and its aftermath. Fred Bradna wrote of Merle Evans keeping the band playing "The Stars and Stripes Forever" emergency score, until seconds before a flaming quarter pole crashed down across the bandstand. Ernestine got a shot of the bandstand with that pole on top.
