A day or two ago, CHIC & SHANNON ran a photo of Fred Bradna, and I recommended his book THE BIG TOP. He describes how his wife, Ella, grew up on European circuses, traveling in caravans like this one, bringing us to reflect on what life was in these wagons. No heat in winter, no cooling system for summer, no running water, dangerous open-flame candles for lighting, or kerosene lamps if affordable. You did your business in a crock pot and shoved it under your bed for the night, since sanitation and hygiene were not part of life. Some things are slow to change, and some things never do. We reflect on the hardships carried into later circus life, and the romance of the sawdust trail fades to the shadows of one's own filtered imagination.

The Roma (Gypsies) of Eastern Europe
bred these horses specifically to
pull their decorative mobile homes
known as Caravans
They are small but very sturdy
draft horses that are very strong
& mostly very good natured
