At the risk of dating myself, I saw Gargantua in Waco, Texas, during his final tour of 1949. He was very ill then, slumped sadly in a corner of his cage. He was far too dangerous to approach for diagnosing, much less treating, as Doc Henderson wrote of in his book. Doc and the keepers were heartbroken that he only continued to fade away. He died the last day of that season, in Miami. He and the Mrs. never had offspring.
