"Miss Jim" at the St, Louis Zoo. The keeper on top looks like Phil Rost. Miss Jim was "purchased" with pennies donated by St. Louis school children in a large fund raising/PR promotion for the new zoo in 1916. She was named for the Pres. of the Board of Education, James Harper. To thank the boys and girls for their contributions, Miss Jim gave free rides from 1916 until a few years before her death in 1948. I think her original name was Judy when acquired from Wm. Hall. (The location of this photo was behind the old elephant house, now an exhibition building called Peabody Hall, probably taken in the early 1940s.)
