Okie verified most of this story. John Carroll never picked up his pay. He had cookhouse and a bunk. He had no habits, such as the drink, so had no special need of money. Many seasons went by with his pay accumulating in the office. Finally, someone told him of the amount he had, and he consulted with D.R. Miller about it. It was decided he wanted final resting places for all the show guys he knew of who had no one to bury them. So the generosity of his circus man's heart, and Mr. Miller's business acumen, saw Showman's Rest in Hugo become what John Carroll hoped for.
