John Ford the famous movie director liked to stage shots like this one, with riders silhouetted on the crest of a distant hill.

RBBB Red Wilkes-Barre, PA a good 20 years back. The elephant tent was a few hundred yards from the back door.

John Ford is remembered for his Westerns, and gave us images coveted by directors, and taught in film schools to this day. But none of his 4 Best Director Oscars were awarded him for a Western. He won for THE INFORMER (1935), GRAPES OF WRATH (1940), HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY (1941), and THE QUIET MAN (1952), swiping this one from DeMille, who was up for his circus picture. Ford remains the only 4-time Best Director winner.
