.....take over Arky!
When Eugene Scott joined the circus the name pinned on him was "Arkansas Slim" and finally dwindled down to "Arky".
.....I guess that's better than "Buckles"!

It was never clear to me where the Arkansas connection was made. Not yet in his teens, he escaped from a Dickensian boys' home in Louisiana, where he was born. On Ventura County death records, his birth year is given as 1908. This could have been just to fill the blank, as was his age, given at his death as 62, when Arky told me he didn't know how old he was. I was left with the lasting impression that when Arky ran from his cruel early environs, he never looked back.
