Fay Alexander and Jackie LeClair both doubled Cornel Wilde for his aerial work as The Great Sebastian. Jackie later told us that Wilde, indeed, did some of his hard-won trapeze work, but not at the 40-foot heights of the standard rigging. Early in filming his role, Wilde discovered his serious fear of heights, and DeMille was merciless in chiding him for not being able to get the needed shots. Wilde got hold of himself, re-doubled his efforts, and accomplished more than he first thought he could. Few may know that Cornel Wilde completed medical school and graduated with his M.D. degree, before turning full-time to acting.

Here we see Fay with his ever-present cigarette. Kim Baer knew him for years, and said he was a chain-smoker. She blamed this for his passing of lung cancer.

Roger....Did La Norma do the one arm swing overs for Betty Hutton? We know she doubled for her in other shots.....

I'm not your best authority for what La Norma actually did. But she is--and she's right there in Sarasota. Jackie LeClaire also would know.
