#16 The Ortons

Had something of a Family Reunion in early 50's while playing Iowa with Kelly-Miller.

Still not smiling much. Reminds me of my grandmother who would scowl at the camera, then lament how she "always takes a terrible picture."

My Mother's side of the family is from Jewell County, Kansas. My son recently sent me a book of the county's notable history. There is a chapter telling of the shooting of the Mayor at a fight when the Orton show was playing Burr Oak, Kansas. A fight pursued between a local and "Claude Powers, adopted son of Miles Orton". It reads as though it was a huge "Hey Rube" event between the town's people and the Ortons. Three people shot, one killed and 16 from the show arrested. Took place on September 19, 1884. Interesting read.
