Buckles, did your dad talk much about Black Diamond's disposition while he was the handler? I can imagine walking from town to town would have Black Diamond so tired, he might not have had the desire to cause trouble.
But isn't walking from town to town on a mud show how most difficult bulls were managed--sold down the line at a bargain/lower price to overland shows that might not otherwise be able to afford a good elephant? No longer transported in rail cars but walking 8-15 miles would sap their energy and keep them from expending it in more destructive directions.
Exactly so!
My Father said the elephant was more interested in finding a good spot to lie down and take a nap rather than cause any trouble.
