No, the Beatty rail era ended in '56, when the train pulled into DeLand. To everyone's dismay, the conversion to trucks was accomplished that winter, and from '57 on, it was back to rubber tires, blown arrows, wrecks, drunken show drivers, and all the anticipated headaches. Beatty himself had said after his truck show of 1945, he'd never go out on trucks again. The '57 decision was made by McClosky, Collins, Calhoun, and Kernan--the new owners after bankruptcy reorganization
Jimmy Armstrong was my great friend on the Castle show in '72 and '73. For some years, Jimmy suffered from the drink, and many found it amusing to get the little guy drunk, then laugh at him. When he came over to Castle, the Shriners continued this sordid pursuit, until Hubert took them on temple for temple, and made them leave Jimmy alone. He helped Jimmy pull himself out of it, and when we were pals over there, Jimmy had made it, and stayed sober the rest of his life. God rest he and Margie. They were dear showfolks.
