Sometimes good old black and white can be more dramatic than living full-color. This shot is one of those black and whites that proves that. --- ToddP

You are right on the black and white IF they are done right.
The slide above is 1941 35mm Kodachrome. Nothing beats a beautiful blue sky like Kodachrome and you got to admit pretty darn good color for way back then.
And I bet the film speed back then was maybe 10.
The black and white shot I will bet was taken with a 4 by 5 or a 5 by 7 graphic. A big difference in film size plus a good photographer to that knows what he is doing.
But black and white done right will last forever and Kodachrome has been around since 1935 and it will not fade.
